"Amsterdam" is an unreleased song by English singer-songwriter Fovvs, referred to as the "Capital City" song as a hint to its title. He composed it alongside "Jekyll and Hyde" and "Rain" in June 2021. It is a conceptual love story about a man who falls in love with a sex worker. Both struggle with the stigmas and societal perceptions, afraid of their relationship being discovered.
Background
He first introduced it over a 29 June 2021 Twitch livestream, not mentioning its title but gave the hint of "Capital City", book, and later on, a horse.[1] However, the "horse" part was actually part of the following lyric, 'Get off your high horse'.
Fovvs played the song over a livestream in November 2021. He elaborated that it was from the perspective of spending one night with someone in the red-light district. Despite falling in love, they don't want to admit it, the narrator being ashamed, and the lover not permitted to fall in love with their client.[2] He explained that he was unsure if it would ever be released, as he didn't like it as much compared to his other songs. He would want to rewrite the verses and the bridge.[3]
Lyrics
[Bridge]
I played your bluff
I played your bluff
And I fell in love
Too long last night
And I waste it all
I waste it all on you
[Verse]
Fuck what you've done to me
'Cause I've lost my heart to you
I can't go anywhere you go
And you said stop what you're telling me
Get off your high horse
Ready to leave
Because I can't go anywhere you go
